Who are the Valkyrie?

The Valkyries, fierce warriors, daughters of Odin

The name in Old Norse, valkyrja, as well as in Old English wælcyrge, literally means "he who chooses the occis". The word valkyria is used by Anglo-Saxon scholars in the light of the names of the Greek-Roman goddesses of vengeance and retribution, Furies or Erinyes, as well as the Roman goddess of war, Bellona.

Valkyrie is, in the oldest strata of belief, a goddess of the dead represented by the raven.

The Story of the Valkyries, the Female Warriors.valkyrie-odin-viking-women

A common misconception about Valkyries is that they would have been female warriors. This is unfounded because there is not a single story of valkyrie fighting and rarely carrying a weapon. In fact, the warrior women of the Viking era are above all a myth, engendered by writers like Saxo Grammaticus who, as a Christian priest, was dismayed by the relative freedom and social power of Viking women in daily life, warrior women who relied much more on references in his classical education to Greek legends of the Amazons than to Viking customs. Saxo's objective was to represent a warrior woman, then to create a manly hero who would beat her with nothing but her aura of virility and beauty.

In modern art, valkyries are sometimes described as beautiful virgins wearing pegasus, adorned with helmets and spear armies. This is a false statement because Valkyrie's "horse" was a Kenning wolf (from the text of Rök's runestone). Contrary to stereotypes, they did not ride winged horses. Their mounts looked more like hordes of wolves dragging among the bodies of dead warriors. The hordes of wolves and ravens, cleaning up the battlefields the next day, could thanks to the legend of the valkyries be there to serve greater causes being much more than scavengers...

The origin of the Valkyries is generally not reported, but several known Valkyries seem to have had deadly parents or are of noble origin.
